Installing LinFIR
Windows
LinFIR is distributed through the Microsoft Store, which also keeps it up to date.
macOS
Download LinFIR for Mac from demaudio.com/linfir/, open the disk image and drag LinFIR into Applications.
Linux
LinFIR for Linux runs on 64-bit PCs (Intel / AMD) with any distribution released since 2020: Ubuntu 20.04, Debian 11, Linux Mint 20, Fedora, RHEL / Rocky / Alma 9, openSUSE Leap 15.3, Arch and later. Pick the download that matches your distribution:
| Distribution | Download | How to install |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS, Zorin OS, elementary OS... | LinFIR-Linux-x86_64.deb | .deb and .rpm packages |
| Fedora, RHEL / Rocky / Alma, openSUSE | LinFIR-Linux-x86_64.rpm | .deb and .rpm packages |
| Arch, Manjaro, EndeavourOS, any other, or to run LinFIR without installing it | LinFIR-Linux-x86_64.AppImage | AppImage |
.deb and .rpm packages
Download LinFIR-Linux-x86_64.deb or LinFIR-Linux-x86_64.rpm (links above).
Double-click it in your Downloads folder. Your software center opens it (App Center on Ubuntu, Software Manager on Linux Mint, GNOME Software on Fedora, Discover on KDE): click Install and enter your password.
Or, in a terminal:
sudo apt install ~/Downloads/LinFIR-Linux-x86_64.deb # Ubuntu, Debian, Mint... sudo dnf install ~/Downloads/LinFIR-Linux-x86_64.rpm # Fedora, RHEL... sudo zypper install ~/Downloads/LinFIR-Linux-x86_64.rpm # openSUSE(
apt, dnforzypperrather thandpkgorrpm, so anything LinFIR needs that is missing gets installed too.)
LinFIR then appears in your applications menu. The package also:
- opens
.lnfprojects in LinFIR when you double-click them, and gives them their own icon. If LinFIR is already running, the project opens in the running window; - lets LinFIR use a rotation table controller (Pololu Tic or GRBL) without administrator rights: see Rotation Table.
Updates are offered by LinFIR itself, as on macOS: see Updating LinFIR.
Uninstall: remove LinFIR from your software center, or run sudo apt remove linfir (sudo dnf remove linfir, sudo zypper remove linfir). Your projects and settings are kept.
Ubuntu 24.04: if double-clicking the package does not open the App Center, update it first (
sudo snap refresh), or use the terminal command above.
AppImage
The AppImage is LinFIR in a single file, which runs on any distribution without being installed:
- Download LinFIR-Linux-x86_64.AppImage (link above) and move it to the folder where you keep your applications, for example
~/Applications. - Make it executable: right-click it, Properties → Permissions → Allow executing file as program. Or, in a terminal:
chmod +x ~/Applications/LinFIR-Linux-x86_64.AppImage. - Double-click it.
The first time, LinFIR offers to add itself to the applications menu and to open .lnf projects when you double-click them (Add to applications). To use a rotation table, click Allow the controllers in Settings → Rotation Table once: LinFIR asks for the administrator password and installs the device rule the packages install.
LinFIR updates its AppImage file itself: see Updating LinFIR. Keep it in a folder you can write to (your home folder, not /opt).
If the AppImage does not start and the error mentions FUSE, install your distribution's fuse3 package (sudo apt install fuse3, sudo dnf install fuse3, sudo pacman -S fuse3).
Uninstall: delete the AppImage file: LinFIR leaves the applications menu with it. Your projects and settings are kept.
