Engineering & Consulting
Engineering work for loudspeaker manufacturers
I work with hi-fi and pro-audio manufacturers on specific projects that need acoustic or DSP expertise. I can take on a defined specification as a subcontractor, or work alongside your own engineers.
I'm an engineer with a background in physics, and I hold a PhD in condensed matter physics. On a loudspeaker project, that mostly means modelling and simulating before building, then measuring carefully. I work with the tools I build for LinFIR, for measurement, FIR and IIR filter design and directivity analysis. When a project calls for a tool that doesn't exist yet, I write it.
Services
Acoustic design
I design the loudspeaker from your specification, from driver selection and enclosure loading to the crossover strategy and the target directivity.
Waveguide design
Waveguides for dome tweeters and compression drivers. I shape them with BEM simulations and optimisation algorithms until they reach the target directivity.
DSP tuning
FIR and IIR crossovers, linear-phase filtering, driver and system correction and time alignment, set up to get the most out of your DSP platform.
Production-line automation
If your production line has a measurement bench, I can supply the software that goes with it. Each unit is measured and gets its own filters and time alignment, and nobody has to step in. The pipeline runs on the LinFIR engine.
Simulation tools
Acoustic simulation software written for your design team, so your engineers can try out ideas before building a prototype.
How a project runs
1. Your specification
Tell me about the product, what it should achieve and what constrains it, such as size, drivers, budget, DSP platform and deadlines.
2. A proposal
I reply with how I would approach it, what I would deliver and a quote. Nothing is committed until you agree.
3. Delivery
Depending on the project, you get designs, filters, software or reports, backed by measurements, and I help your team integrate them.
Discuss a project
Everything you share stays confidential, and I'm happy to sign an NDA.
